Welcome to the Journey!

This is the beginning of our journey into Life Learning and you are invited to come along for the ride! I plan to write not just what we're learning during our days, but occasionally about other homeschooling and parenting topics.

A little background information for you:
My name is Jess. I have my bachelor's degree in psychology with a focus and background in childhood development, behavior modification (discipline), and psychiatric illness, though I no longer work professionally in the field. My husband, Scott, and I are now self-employed glass artists and travel a lot in order to sell our work. Initially, we had planned to homeschool our daughter, Loren (DOB 11/15/08), because we didn't want her to miss out on all of the life experiences to be had on the art show circuit or have to deal with the hassle of missing so many days of public school. Now, we are choosing to homeschool because we feel that the traditional school system is inadequate and that we are better able to provide an education that challenges Loren while still allowing her to experience life as an artist's kid.

At this time, we are planning to follow a "Delight Directed" approach to homeschooling. My simple understanding of Delight Directed homeschooling is that the parents are facilitators to learning, providing resources, support, and encouragement as the child/student follows their interests, learning about a variety of educational aspects along the way, developing the knowledge of  how to learn, all the while retaining the child-like enthusiasm for learning that has driven her through all of the developmental stages she has already learned. Examples of this will be demonstrated through my future writings. We have done a lot of research into different homeschooling methods and feel that this method best reflects our values both in life and in education.

I do not plan for this blog to be an entertaining story as much as I intend for it to be a way to chronicle our progress for ourselves and other interested parties. Enjoy!
